Jaco Taco

Ahh, another Sunday has rolled around. We piled the family into the car early today to head out to Jaco to try Jaco Taco. This is a 24 hour Mexican restaurant that I have driven by 1000 times but never thought to stop in and eat at. I got a recomendation from Gringo Jeff to check this place out so we did.

Like Clarita's, 90 percent of the people in the restaurant had some sort of alcoholic beverage in their hands; beside us we had a young mother doing tequila shots while two of her friends chugged ice cold cervecas (this is at 09:00 on a Sunday morning). Ahhh, the good old days before having children and all the responsibility that comes with that!!!

So, the atmosphere was pleasant, this is not a fancy place, it is a down to earth simple, open air restaurant that had a million fans (which was great) to keep the air moving. Some nice country music playing in the back ground and a very friendly and busy Tica waitress.

When the food arrived, my wife shot me a look of i told you so, as Jeff had already warned us of large portions. (We had discussed ordering just one to share as we are not big portion eaters, but I thought we could handle whatever came our way) So, yes, the portions are truly American buffet, all you can eat style!!! The food was GREAT. This is the best Huevos Rancheros that I have had so far in our Sudnay morning quest, the eggs were cooked perfectly, the sauce had a perfect amount of spice to it and the crispy tortilla was nice as well. As the portions were so big, we just ate the eggs and left the sides of either rice and beans or hash browns.

The biggest downside of this meal was the price, 16,000 Colones which is just over $30 for two orders of Huevos Rancheros, two Orange Juices and a Coffee!!!!! Although the food was great, I am not sure that it was $30 dollars great.

Jaco Taco, located at the North End of Jaco is sitting in first place for now!!!

Soda Katia Herradura

Today we tried a local Costa Rican place which is called a "Soda"  This one is 5 minutes away from our house so we decided to take the golf cart.  It is a small neat little place that is open air.  The server was stunned, he had to come back to the table 5 or 6 times to get the order straight.  The smoothies were great, there is one photo of my son Oliver with his face buried in the cup.  The Huevos Rancheros arrived (they only brought one plate for some reason so we had to order again) They tasted great, the rice and beans were a nice compliment to this meal.  Overall the setting was comfortable and informal, the smoothies good and the Heuvos Rancheros were great.  The best that we have had out the three that we have eaten at so far.

After our meal we thought that we would cruise the beach in our golf cart, it was fun for a while but the cart stopped ( I think that it overheated) in the middle of the road which was a little embarrasing!!!  All in all a good Sunday morning.

Sunrise Restaurant Jaco

I forgot to post this last weekend but we did remember to go out and try Heuvos Rancheros.  We decided to try a place that was recommended by one of my friends.  This is a restaurant that is part of a bed and breakfast across the street from KFC and Quiznos.

Anyways, they have great smoothies, 4 or 5 different flavours and they are so big they come in 2 glasses!!!  The Huevos Rancheros here were horrible.  The potatoes were extremely greasy and the sauce that was on top of the eggs was like watered down tomato soup.  The bill was 10,500 colones which is more expensive than Claritas.  I would have the smoothies here but not the Huevos Rancheros.  this place gets a big thumbs down!!!!

Clarita's Beach Bar Playa Jaco

Our first test for the best Huevos Rancheros is at Claritas.  It is a simple place located right on the beach in the North end of Playa Jaco.  General patrons seem to be tourists and people that like to start drinking before noon as we seemed to be the only people without a cold Imperial on our table.  Anyways the service was friendly but slow.  The huevos rancheros were accompanied by some fried potatoes and white toast, overall I would say that the food was mediocre, nothing great.  The bill came to C9,000 which is about $18 for our complete breakfast.
